Think Sustainable, Think India

Think Sustainable, Think India

Presently in India, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, sustainable fashion has acquired a revivalist fervor. Consumers are now imbibing precepts of green fashion practices that aim at treading the planet more carefully. They realize that ethically manufactured goods pave way for a healthy environment which is central to the future of happiness and health of the planet.

In the last decade, India has experienced a boom in the production of sustainable products due to the availability of raw materials, human capital, transparent supply chains, government-certified facilities, flexible production lead times, and prompt delivery of lower minimum order quantities. The improvement of the ecosystem for entrepreneurship and innovation in circular startups has further enhanced the prospects for sustainable fashion.

India -The cultural capital of  Sustainable Fashion:

The soul of fashion in the Indian cultural ethos has always been green since time immemorial. This is amply depicted through our knowledge of traditional arts and crafts finding a place in sacred Indian texts. It is also exhibited by the wisdom that is spread amongst generations of local artisans. In the twentieth century, fast fashion captivated the consumer psyche, adding to the woes of global warming and the decline of indigenous fashion.

India -The cultural capital of  Sustainable Fashion:

Why India?

India has a huge pool of artisans who form a major part of the non-farm rural economy about 7 million out of which 53% are women. The boom in sustainability has provided them with economic empowerment, capacity building, and a feeling of inclusion in the mainstream economy through the creation of green avenues for earning. The magnificently rich Indian civilization stands as a beacon that bears the torch of sustainable philosophy embedded in Vedic knowledge, Yoga, and Ayurveda. With great collective wisdom emerges the responsibility to be a thought leader that influences the world to adopt a simple yet profound way of sustainable living.

Impact of sustainable materials:

Indian arts and crafts involve the use of sustainable materials like natural stones, metals like aluminum, steel, and copper, natural fibers like cotton, jute, hemp, wool, silk, water reed, cane, and other raw materials like wood, glass, paper, leather, ceramics, and more.

Impact of sustainable materials:

For instance, copper used by mankind for over 10000 years is still one of the most sought-after metals in modern times. The gorgeous versatile brownish-orange appeal and green patina create brilliant warm and cool contrasts in home decor settings. The metal which is 100% recyclable, lightweight, resistance and corrosion-free, low maintenance, and durable with anti-germ properties offers a great choice of sustainable material for home decor artifacts like frames, lighting, accessories, planters, vases, candle holders, wall art, and more in different styles, colors, textures, and shapes.

India symbolizes diversity

Every Indian state is a world of diversity in terms of land, people, raw materials, history, art, craft, flora, and fauna.  Be it straw grass from the northeast, garments, ceramics, wood, stone, glass, leather, and metal crafts from Uttar Pradesh, coir from Kerala, artisanal jewelry from Jaipur, or pashmina from Kashmir - the DNA of our products is as unique as the local artisans found in every state.

For instance, many planet-conscious people are using straw grass baskets and bags in urban settings. For instance, bags made from the murta plant also known as the Assamese Sea Grass imparts a natural brown hue, and intense strength, chemical free, and are completely biodegradable. Assam also houses handloom weaving harnessed out of Muga Silk which is endemic to the state. Similarly, Sikki grass found in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh is used to make grass handicrafts. Palm Leaf Basketry of the Nadar community of Tamil Nadu deserves special attention as they make artistic items and utility products out of it. Northeastern India is a unique storehouse of arts and crafts products using seagrass and cane.
